Google office in China closed temporarily because of the coronavirus outbreak. Google also temporarily closed all offices in Hong Kong and Taiwan. OMG! What is the detailed information? Let’s jump into it.
At present, offices are closed for the extended Chinese New Year holiday, a step taken by the Chinese government to help reduce the spread of the virus by encouraging residents to stay inside and avoid travel.
To The Verge, a Google spokesman said the company now plans to close its offices according to government guidelines, and that it also imposes temporary business travel restrictions to fly to mainland China and Hong Kong.
The company also advises employees currently in China, and employees who have close family members returning from the country, return home as soon as possible and work from home for at least 14 days from the date of their departure.
The move marks the latest increase in the technology industry’s efforts to reduce the risk associated with the virus, which according to health officials comes from the city of Wuhan in China and which has caused at least 132 deaths and more than 6,000 confirmed cases.
Because of the technology industry’s close relationship with China, as the world’s largest internet market and manufacturing center, technology employees routinely travel to and from China and almost every large company in the industry has offices in the country.
Although Google does not operate many of the most popular web services in China because of historic tensions with the Chinese government, the company maintains four official offices in the country.
Google also maintains a strong presence in China due to its hardware efforts, because many of Google’s product teams responsible for devices such as Pixel phones and Google Home loudspeakers work with Chinese suppliers and factories for manufacturing.
